Alyson grew up in Friday Harbor, then went to the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and received her B.A. in 1990. In 1995 she earned a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Columbia University in New York.

After graduation she initially worked for Good Samaritan Hospital in Buckley and Enumclaw, then spent three years at Therapeutic Associates North Lake Physical Therapy, an outpatient clinic in Seattle. She and Andrew were married in 2002. Returning to the San Juans, she worked as a home health physical therapist throughout the islands for Island Hospital. She has been working at Orcas Island Physical Therapy since 2008, where she especially enjoys working with older adults and helping them to stay active. She and Andrew live near Doe Bay with their two young sons.
